Academic Courses

Students will have seven class periods per day, as well as an activity/club period. Each student’s schedule will include:
  • English
  • History
  • Math
  • Science
  • Skills Seminar, with a focus on reading/organization/executive function skill training
  • Arts elective
  • Studio arts class that will allow students to work on group projects during an extra arts period.

Study halls will be built into the school day, during 8th period as well as several days a week during the Studio Arts collaborative class.

Homework will be limited to two hours per night, assigned in four subjects at approximately 30 minutes per subject. Students will be encouraged to self-advocate if they find that homework is taking too long to complete--or if they need more challenge!

Humanities: an integrated approach
A core feature of The Cedar School is that at each grade level, the students’ English course will correlate with their history course, covering related topics and similar time periods to ensure that students learn in context. Art, photography and music will be incorporated at every grade level as well, in every humanities class.

Grade 9: US History and Literature in the twentieth century.

Grade 10: US Government and Civics, and correlated literature.

Grade 11: World Cultures and Literature.

Grade 12: Literature of Journeys, Creative Writing.

"I feel inspired, valued, and motivated to come into work every day and look forward to a successful year."
